Bin there done that
Elizabeth Faulkner, Annameika Nethery, Riona Gamboa, Ella Parsell
Waimea Heights Primary School

Wishcycling is a big problem around the world, it is when people put non-recyclables in a recycling bin because they’re trying to do good. This means that rubbish that isn’t supposed to be in the recycling bin gets thrown away by the sorters and into landfill, polluting our environment. Our idea is to make a bin sensor with a microbit, GroveShield, and a Ultrasonic ranger.

Second Place

Smiley Distancing
Coco Pavlides, Eve Ward, Jasper Chen
Waimea Heights Primary School

Our Group is creating a badge that senses how close you are to somebody else. We made the badge so it looks like a smiley face hence “Smiley Distance”. During the Covid-19 pandemic the issue of social distancing has been crucial to how we fight the disease. We found social distancing regulations are being ignored often. We are using an Ultrasonic Ranger to sense the distance between to people, The Micro:bit attached to the Ultrasonic Ranger will flash or beep so you will be able to tell when you’re not social distancing

Year 11 – 12

First Place

Robocall Deterrent Device
Flynn Dobson, Isabella Spindler, Mason Porter
Launceston College

The Robocall Deterrent Device (RDD for short) is a device aimed at defending the elderly and less tech-savvy from scam robocalls. Once a scammer has lured in a victim, it is near impossible to convince them they have been fooled, due to our stubborn nature as humans, therefore our device means to cut off these scams at their roots.

Through chips such as a Bluetooth mobile handsfree call chip, a mobile keypad input receival chip, an MP3 player chip, and a memory chip, we will assemble a device that will connect to a phone with Bluetooth and play an audio recording with a series of numbers that must be entered to prove the caller is a human before passing the call through. Our device will also be able to block phone numbers from calling by allowing the owner to enter them on a keypad and see blocked numbers on a screen.
